Top 50 (or so...) Games

The bar has been raised, and I must respond in kind.

I was amazed at the amount of games I got as my "nominees", and I had to lump a few numbered sequels in together to make it fit, but I think I'm pretty happy with it. Might have to rank them sometime in the future, though ;)

Anyway, without further ado...Collapse )

The play is real
I can totally understand how Synecdoche, New York wouldn't connect with some people. It is a willfully challenging, distinctive, messy, insanely ambitious work, and I imagine that many people's reactions would be (and have been) to pass it off as pretentious or incomprehensible. It is the most experimental Hollywood film since Mulholland Dr., and the experience for many viewers may be somewhat similar to that tricky David Lynch masterpiece. And I would offer this bit of advice to those who found that film (including myself) and Synecdoche a frustrating jumble their first viewing: see it again. Please.

Because Synecdoche, New York is the most amazing film released in years.

It may require an open mind, a desire to take a chance, but, if you find yourself lucky enough to tune into its unique wavelength, you will be rewarded immeasurably by a film that plays with, makes mockery of, and finally transcends traditional film notions of time, character, art, identity, individuality, life. Don't worry if it doesn't all make perfect sense; it's not supposed to, and it probably doesn't anyway. That's just another part of it, another part of existence: it is what it is, in all its jumbled, regretful, inexocerable, everythingness. It explores the mind, thought like no other film before, touching upon the shared human experience like nothing else I have ever encountered. It is the ultimate existential film.

Seeing it felt like dying. Walking along the streets of downtown Fargo in ten below weather after the final credits had rolled, I felt like a ghost doomed to retrace the steps of his recently departed life.

I could go on, and on, and on, and on, but my words would be insufficient, as would my time.

See it.

Please.
